Music & Lyrics - Wrecking Ball

WRECKING BALL

I came across this photo a couple months ago.  I couldn’t figure out if it was the anguished look on the kid’s face or the absurdity of an alpaca tackling him--but I felt for the little guy...and I laughed very hard.  As some of you know, Molly and I moved back from Dallas in May of 2011.  To say that it was a negative experience would be a massive understatement.  When we decided to return home and become Steady Rush, Wrecking Ball was actually the first song we wrote together.  We had written separately in the past, but this was our very first collaboration.  I know many artists that would tell you that the best songs, or pieces of art, come after a time of extreme pain or heartache.  I think Wrecking Ball is a great example of this.  Sometimes, it just feels so good to tell the truth, and I would argue it feels even better to sing about it.  With that said, Wrecking Ball is the same story that’s been told a million times.  It’s one of sadness and hurt, but it’s also one of hope for the future.  It’s an acknowledgment of the sorrow, and a declaration that we can, and sometimes should move on.  Without our experience in Dallas, there would be no Steady Rush.  And that is something Molly and I always keep in mind.  We grew there.  And sometimes growth really sucks.  So, if you’re in the midst of a painful time, don’t hesitate to connect with the universal language of music.  Maybe even blast this song through your stereo and sing along with us.  We may not be able to stop a wrecking ball or an alpaca from smashing into you, but we can promise that eventually you will feel better.

Standing on the corner of Tall Tales & White Lies
The glare of my loneliness blinded my eyes
What’s with the red tape they’re putting up?
I’ve got a loaded heart and a twisting in my gut
Oh no in 3, 2, 1...

You’re a wrecking ball
You swung into me
Knocked down all the walls
Left me in the debris
I was mesmerized, but to my surprise
You were gaining speed, moving as you please
With a heavy hand, you brought me to my knees

Sittin’ down to deal with demolition and intuition
At this table, something is unstable
This negotiation is messing with my foundation
'Cause you mean well, but you’re not good
In 3, 2, 1...

You’re a wrecking ball
You swung into me
Knocked down all the walls
Left me in the debris
I was mesmerized, but to my surprise
You were gaining speed, moving as you please
With a heavy hand, you brought me to my knees
You were gaining speed, moving as you please
With a heavy hand, you brought me to my knees

I was blind until you left
Now I see you clearly
As the sun hits my eyes, the horizon line becomes defined
I was blind until you left
Now I see you clearly
As the sun hits my eyes, the horizon line becomes defined
Yeah...

You’re a wrecking ball
You swung into me
Knocked down all the walls
Left me in the debris

You’re a wrecking ball
You swung into me
Knocked down all the walls
Left me in the debris (You left me, you left me, yeah you left me)
I was mesmerized, but to my surprise
You were gaining speed, moving as you please (c’mon)
With a heavy hand, you brought me to my knees (ooooh)
You were gaining speed, moving as you please (c’mon)
With a heavy hand, you brought me to my knees

Music & Lyrics - Time Traveler

Hello!  It’s been a few months since we released our debut EP 3... 2... 1... , and we could not be happier with all of the feedback and encouragement we’ve received from everyone who has taken the time to listen and share the music.  Kylie and I put a lot of intention into the words we sing, so we want to use the next few blogs to share with you the thoughts and inspiration behind each of the EP tracks--starting with Time Traveler.  By request, we’ve included all of the lyrics, so feel free to read away and sing along!

TIME TRAVELER

If you’ve been to one of our live shows, you’ve probably heard us mention a time or two that we believe there are good men in the world---We don’t meet them very often, but we believe they are out there.  As single young females in the music industry, we are learning to traverse the complex terrain of gender politics and sketchy business opportunites.  We can’t tell you how thankful we are for each and every humble, honest man that we encounter.   They may not know it, but they often help us mark the peaks between the valleys. The concept of Time Traveler is based loosely off of the book/movie, The Time Traveler’s Wife.  Kylie had the idea of describing the “spirit of a good man” being elusive in our society these days.  When it comes to chivalry and noble character, the song wonders if that man-type is lost back in a day when those virtues were valued.  Just like men should vouch for women of integrity, we believe we should do the same for all those men out there trying to make a difference in the world.  If you are a good man, we appreciate you!

He had strong eyes that spoke affection
He’d never cross the line--an expert in protection
A man of many lives--the depth of the ocean
It only took one look to dive in
He’s like the waves that crash and roar
But they bow before they reach the shore

Are you traveling through time
While these guys are wasting mine
They stake their claim before they know my name
Dropping all their pickup lines (no, no)
So are you making your way back to me
Are you trapped back in another century (Where are you now)

His enemy is apathy
He doesn’t go looking for a fight
But he lives for what’s right
He’s like the wind weaving through the streets
The phantom that I know exists
But always is unseen

Are you traveling through time
While these guys are wasting mine
They stake their claim before they know my name
Dropping all their pickup lines (no, no)
So are you making your way back to me
Are you trapped back in another century
Where are you now
Woa, woa, woa
Where are you now
Woa, woa, woa

Maybe it’s the voice, maybe it’s the power
That makes you think he’s been around since the very first hour
So tell me, where are you now
Tell me, I need you know
Yeah maybe it’s the voice, maybe it’s the power
That makes you think he’s been around since the very first hour
So tell me, where are you now
I need you now

Are you traveling through time
While these guys are wasting mine
They stake their claim before they know my name
Dropping all their pickup lines (no, no)
So are you making your way back to me
Are you trapped back in another century
Are you-ou-ou
Traveling through time
While these guys are wasting mine
They stake their claim before they know my name
Dropping all their pickup lines (Oh no, no)
So are you making your way back to me
Are you trapped back in another century (Where are you now) (Woa, woa, woa)

Where are you now (Where are you now)
Where are you now (I need you now)

Woa woa woa
I need you now (I need you now)

There's No Plan B

Molly: There is no plan B.
Kylie: What do you mean? What if it doesn’t work out how we want it to?
Molly: It will, I know it will.

This kind of confidence coming from someone pursuing music might be a little bit unbelievable.  It’s a one in a million shot right?  Why would you ever put all of your eggs in that fragile basket? When I had this conversation with Molly about two years ago, before Steady Rush existed, I probably had the same reaction you’re having right now.  How can she be so confident?  What will she do if it doesn’t work out? After these two years of friendship with Molly I’ve learned that this dream, and this passion to impact the world is just in her.  She is born to do this.  She is equipped to be a person of substance, in an industry that strives to get rid of it.  She is more creative than anyone I know. She’s made for this.

Her decision to go all out really inspired me. I would sit awake at night wondering, “What does that feel like?  To be so confident and sure that this thing is really going to take off?”  And it has to be more than just talent, because we all know how many amazingly talented musicians are out there.  It has to be something deeper than that.  And then I got it.  It’s the desire to be the influence in the world every mom wishes their little girl would grab onto.  It’s that deep seeded longing to be a glimmer of hope in a place that seems to have run out.  As I began to grasp this, my outlook really changed.  I began to stop doubting, and just believed.  There are so many quotes out there telling people to dream big, and that anything is possible.  And for the first time in my life, I really believe those words.  With leaving college for this vision fresh on my mind, I’m really putting it to the test.  And it’s a test that I can't wait to start. I truly believe something big is going to happen for Steady Rush music, and I’m so glad you all are along for the ride.  We couldn’t do it without you. Thanks for supporting our dream!

Rockin' In The Rockies!

We spent Thanksgiving in Colorado, performing our hearts out at The Walnut Room.  With this being our first out-of-state show, we were ecstatic to sing on a stage that has been graced by Gavin DeGraw, Jewel, The Fray, and the best local entertainment in Denver.  Big thanks to Tohbias Juniel and DC Global for your hospitality!

When Our Powers Combine....!!!

Steady Rush is a big fan of mashups (when they're done right).  If you've ever seen us perform, you know that we like to bust these out--just to keep you on your toes.  From N'Sync to U2, and now Nicki Minaj to Leona Lewis--the options are nearly endless.  When you have the right ingredients, it just works.  We are especially fond of our latest pop hybrid.  We've had a great response so far, so take a listen and spread the word (video) if you agree!
